We all want to improve our wellbeing, but wellbeing is a huge topic and it can be hard to know what to focus on. Add in the events of the last couple of years and it seems like optimism is a very good angle from which to start! This two-week course explores optimism from the perspective of our cognitions – how we interpret what has happened to us, and how that influences our expectations of the future. In short webinar-style videos and accompanying worksheets, you will be introduced to a range of practical strategies to enhance optimism which in turn can have a positive impact on your overall wellbeing. We will also think about the roles of kindness and compassion, and how by helping others we can help ourselves.

The course comprises 6 videos with over 60 minutes of content introducing you to the theoretical foundations of optimism and wellbeing, and evidence-based strategies and ideas. There are 6 worksheets (totalling 15 pages) which can you edit or print and complete again and again. Topics covered include:

  • Defining optimism

  • The relationship between optimism and wellbeing

  • Attributional styles

  • Wellness activities

  • Affirmations

  • Mindfulness

  • Using music

  • Examining thinking styles

  • Practising gratitude

  • Positive self-talk

  • Kindness, compassion and altruism

  • The importance of trying new things

This course works brilliantly as a stand-alone, but was designed to complement the other Professionals Courses on Stress SOS and Re-thinking Work-life Balance. In fact, I designed the Professionals Courses based on my own experiences: chronic work stress affected my work-life balance and, over time, turned me into a pessimist when I had always been an optimist.
